Bludgeon, don’t split, LA The move toward San Fernando Valley secession reminds me of a story my father used to tell of a man who worked 30 years for city government, polishing the cannon in front of City Hall. One day he became angry with his employers for the way he was mistreated. So he bought his own cannon, and went into business for himself. The San Fernando Valley works very well as a major part of Los Angeles. But if we secede, then we’ll have a city well fitted out with only about half the things a city must offer to provide a good quality of life for its citizens. Certain groups will make a fortune during and immediately after the transition, to be sure. But the average Valley citizen won’t be any better off, and in fact will probably be worse off. We’d get far better results, dollar for dollar and pound for pound, by organizing and using our clout to bludgeon Los Angeles into giving us more of what we want, without taking away any of what we already have.
